The book charts the development of cinema, and its\ndistribution and exhibition, from a transnational and colonial\nperspective. The first decade of cinema in Southeast Asia, particularly\nSingapore, is used as a point of reference from where issues such as\nimperialism, colonial discourse, nation- building, ethnicity, gender,\nand race is examined. I demonstrate the interconnectedness of\nSoutheast Asia, and its constructed national borders, by examining\nthe transnational itinerant amusement companies that performed in\nthe region. These entertainment companies, in turn, were dependent\non imperial networks, in terms of trade and communication systems,\nwhich facilitated their movement between territories. Cinematic\nvenues negotiated segregated, colonial racial politics by creating a\ncommon social space where people from different ethnic and social\nbackgrounds gathered.","brand":"Stockholm University","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":32444273819748,"sku":"9789187235542","price":16.95,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"url":"https:\/\/suomalainen-test.myshopify.com\/products\/blurring-the-colonial-binary-turn-of-the-century-transnational-entertainment-in-southeast-asia","provider":"Suomalainen Test","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
