Using a local case study of\nthe city and county of Szatmár\/Satu-Mare, this thesis investigates the\npractice and social mechanisms of economic nationalizing. It explores\nthe interplay between ethno-national and economic factors, and\nfurthermore analyses what social mechanisms lead to and explain\ninclusion, exclusion and annihilation.\n\nThe empirical results show that citizenship in both countries was\nseparated in an ethnically hierarchical way, making minorities secondclass\ncitizens. This process of ethnic, and finally racial, exclusion\nmarked the whole period, culminating in the annihilation of Jews\nthroughout most of Hungary in 1944.\n\nThe overall thesis is that economic nationalizing through the\nexclusion of minorities induces vicious circles of ethnic bifurcation,\npolitical instability and unfavorable conditions for achieving\neconomic prosperity. Exclusion served the elite’s short-term interest\nbut undermined the nation’s long-term ability to prosper.","brand":"Stockholm University","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":32449150222436,"sku":"9789176490037","price":19.95,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"url":"https:\/\/suomalainen-test.myshopify.com\/products\/economic-nationalizing-in-the-ethnic-borderlands-of-hungary-and-romania-inclusion-exclusion-and-annihilation-in-szatmar-satu-mare-1867-1944","provider":"Suomalainen Test","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
