To stop the underlying ‘ecological crisis’, a large-scale ‘ecological\nconstruction’ programme was carried out.\n\nThis thesis focuses on exploring ecological resettlement, a policy measure\nin the programme, in the pastoral context of western China. The aim is to\nunderstand environmentalisation through drawing out the politics of the\nformulation, implementation and effects of ecological resettlement at and across\ndifferent scales. By combining insights from political ecology, environmental\ngovernance, migration, and pastoralism studies, with fieldwork, interviews,\nanalysis of policy documents, and statistical analysis, this book provides a\nnuanced approach to exploring the human-environment relationship.\n\nThe analysis exposes in a developmental context how the central state made\ngrassland degradation governable, how and why the local state put emphasis\nmore on short-term-effective solutions rather than on environmental\nsustainability, and how and why the pastoral households prioritised social,\neconomic and cultural considerations over environmental concerns when\nmaking migration decisions. The study draws attention to the significant\nimpact of ecological resettlement on Mongolian pastoralism. While further\nfragmented rangelands obstructed mobile pastoralism, new social arrangements\nenabled migrant households to remain involved with pastoralism.","brand":"Stockholms universitet","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":32433637359716,"sku":"9789176491287","price":17.95,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"url":"https:\/\/suomalainen-test.myshopify.com\/products\/pastoralists-and-the-environmental-state-a-study-of-ecological-resettlement-in-inner-mongolia-china","provider":"Suomalainen Test","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
