In Proximity and\nLearning in Internationalisation - small Swedish IT firms in India,\nWestermark combines a discussion on proximities and processes of\nlearning to present a more thorough understanding of how social\nproximity can develop over time, and furthermore, in what way\nsocial proximity matters for service firms working in an international\nsetting.\nThe qualitative exploration of the process of learning is inspired by\n'communities of practice', and Westermark focuses on ways in which\nindividuals at firms through social participation learn to collaborate\nacross distance, and develop a common way of working together in\nan international setting.\nThis thesis continues the vibrant discussion in economic geography\non proximity as more than 'being there' in a physical sense. In this\ndiscussion, the understanding of proximity is as a metaphor of\ncloseness, putting more emphasis on individuals and their experiences.\nIn this thesis, experience of closeness is empirically explored through\na longitudinal study. This includes trying to operationalise social\nproximity by exploring the experience of social proximity amongst\nthe individuals at the case firms.
